Catherine (Emily) Hendrick

After completing her B.S. in Nutritional Sciences in 2000, Emily worked with Planned Parenthood in Reno, NV developing reproductive and sexual health education programs for teen moms and also for youth who were incarcerated, homeless, and living in rehabilitation and mental health centers.  She then served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras working with adolescents in HIV prevention activities including youth radio shows and theatre productions.  She went on to work with an affiliate of the International Planned Parenthood Federation in the Eastern Caribbean developing educational curriculum, creating monitoring and evaluation tools and grant writing for program expansions.  It is here where her interest in Maternal and Child Health research began as she became involved with looking at the incidence of unsafe abortion and the gaps in prevention services in countries where abortion is not legal.  She has recently entered the world of university reproductive health research and interviews women across the country about their experiences with abortion and childbirth for a study with UCSF.  During her vacations, Emily has worked as a massage therapist, a children’s yoga instructor, a whitewater river rafting guide, a ropes course facilitator and a singing waitress.  She will be starting her first year of the 2-year MPH program.
